Age is probably the most important factor to consider when purchasing a
baby toy.
Here is a guideline for choosing the toy appropriate for your baby in their first year. If you have questions, please don’t
hesitate to give our trained customer service team a call.
Ride-ons -
Ride-ons are very popular with the young toddler – motoring around in a coupe car or on a wooden trike is an important
skill to master. There are many models available in the toy world so make sure you can accommodate them in your home before
you buy.
Electronic Toys -
Electronic toys like “LittleTouch Leappads” from Leapfrog are also beginning to be of interest to baby but make sure you supervise
as the books can be ripped apart by mistake. Babies are practicing language now so any toy that encourages them to imitate or
find things is a must.
Toys for Building -
Lego Duplo and Quatro should not be overlooked as baby enjoys sticking different objects together. This is something you can do together
but don't get upset when baby destroys your dinosaur sculpture.
Role-Play Toys -
Toys to also consider are ones that excite your baby's imagination – there are lots of role play toys like musical farm
trucks and houses, cars and diggers. And toy trains are suitable for toddlers at around 18 months. Tomy produces ‘My First
Train' which goes round a single track.
Outdoors Toys -
Outdoors, baby will be interested in climbing frames, slides and play houses so if you have the space they are always a good
investment. Again some playhouses need to be put together by you so be prepared for a couple of hours of challenge.
Toddlers might want to sit at their own table now or lounge in their own armchair as they imitate mummy and daddy.
Toys for Creativity -
Creativity plays a huge part now, so look at art easels, paints and brushes and musical instruments like the “Bee Bop Band”
from The Great Little Trading Company or instruments from the Early Learning Centre.
Toys for Sharing -
At this age your toddler is learning really fast about socializing, playing with others and sharing so look for toys that encourage toddler to interact with others.
Play tea-set toys, kettles and kitchens are of interest to toddler and he'll make you a cup of tea or twenty.
Developmental Toys -
Don't forget about the physical motor skills – a safe trampoline will encourage toddler to develop his balance and instill confidence in his ability. Look at
investing in a ball pit, water table or a sandpit to encourage toddler to learn about his world.
